INTERNATIONAL NEWS
India–Morocco Defence Cooperation
India and Morocco signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Rabat to enhance defence cooperation. The agreement was signed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his Moroccan counterpart Abdellatif Laudíyi. Key provisions include joint military exercises, training programs, co-development of defence technologies, and cooperation in cyber security, counter-terrorism, maritime security, and peacekeeping operations. India will also open a defence wing at its embassy in Rabat to facilitate coordination. This agreement is a major step in India’s Africa outreach, strengthening diplomatic and defence ties in North Africa.
The BBNJ Treaty (High Seas Treaty)
The Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Treaty, also called the High Seas Treaty, reached 60 ratifications, paving its entry into force by January 2026. Rooted in UNCLOS (1982), the treaty focuses on conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction (beyond 200 nautical miles). Provisions include creation of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), profit-sharing from marine genetic resources (MGRs), mandatory Environmental Impact Assessments, and technology transfer. India ratified the treaty in 2024, aligning it with SDG-14 (Life Below Water). This step enhances India’s global environmental leadership and ocean governance role.
India elected to Interpol Asian Committee
India was elected as a member of the Interpol Asian Committee during its 25th Regional Conference in Singapore. Represented by the CBI, India’s presence strengthens international collaboration in combating cybercrime, terrorism, organized crime, and human trafficking. This move elevates India’s role in regional security, improves intelligence-sharing, and boosts its law enforcement leadership at a time when Asia faces mounting digital and cross-border crime challenges.
Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger exit ICC
Three African countries – Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger – announced their withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC), calling it a tool of “neo-colonial repression”. The ICC, headquartered in The Hague and established in 2002 under the Rome Statute, prosecutes individuals for genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and aggression. With 125 members, several major powers like India, the US, China, Russia, and Israel remain outside. The withdrawal highlights African resistance to what is seen as Western dominance in global justice systems.

Expansion of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY)
The government approved 25 lakh additional LPG connections, raising the total to 10.58 crore beneficiaries. Launched in 2016, PMUY provides deposit-free LPG connections to women in poor households, along with a free first refill and stove. It aims to promote clean cooking fuel access, especially in rural areas, while reducing indoor air pollution.
Mumbai International Cruise Terminal (MICT)
PM Modi inaugurated the MICT at Ballard Pier, Mumbai, developed under the Cruise India Mission. Spread across 4.15 lakh sq ft, it is India’s largest cruise terminal, capable of handling 1 million passengers annually and accommodating five cruise ships simultaneously. The terminal has 72 immigration counters and world-class infrastructure. The Cruise India Mission, running till 2029, seeks to make India a global cruise tourism hub.
Ahmednagar Railway Station renamed ‘Ahilyanagar’
In a tribute to Ahilyabai Holkar, the 18th-century Maratha queen renowned for philanthropy and temple building, the Ahmednagar railway station in Maharashtra was renamed Ahilyanagar. The station code ‘ANG’ remains unchanged.
Adi Yuva Fellowship and Adi Karmayogi Volunteer Programme
Launched by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs in partnership with the United Nations, this programme under the Adi Karmayogi Abhiyan aims to empower tribal youth.
- Adi Yuva Fellowship: 12-month paid fellowship with UN agencies, mentoring and career development.
- Adi Karmayogi Volunteer Programme: Supported by UNFPA; 82 volunteers deployed in MP and Rajasthan.
These initiatives strengthen tribal leadership for India’s development vision 2047.
Global Food Regulators Summit (GFRS) 2025
Organized by FSSAI at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, on 26–27 Sept, the summit will run alongside World Food India 2025. Theme: “Developing Food Systems – Anna & Mana”. The event seeks to harmonize food safety standards, enhance risk assessments, and showcase traditional nutritious diets.

Non-invasive Brain Stimulation
Indian scientists at INST (DST) developed a nanomaterial graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) that stimulates neurons without electrodes or surgery. It holds promise for treating Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s and could be used in future brain-computing technologies.

Exercise ‘Amogha Fury’ – 24 September Current Affairs 2025
